Step 6: Starting Exercises

The final step in choosing specific workouts is to determine what exercise(s) you want to start the workout. In most cases, it’s not a big issue, but for the sake of variety it’s good to vary starting exercises. For example, if you’re doing a four-day split routine (e.g., upper body on Monday and Thursday and lower body on Tuesday and Friday), you may want to start the Monday upper body workout with a barbell bench press and the Thursday workout with a machine overhead press. Similarly, the Tuesday lower body workout may commence with a barbell squat as the first multi-joint exercise and the Friday workout may start with a leg press.

Using a variety of exercises and order of exercise performance can be a great way to eliminate monotony. As a result, you have a choice when it comes to the following:

Upper body workouts—the first upper body exercise to do

Lower body workouts—the first lower body exercise to do

Total body workouts—the first upper and lower body exercises to do
